The snow glittering slope can only be ploughed with correctly adjusted snowboard bindings. Exactly this small detail on the snowboard is the icing on the cake, which can prevent or at least spoil the entire snowboard holiday.


Different categories of Snowboard Bindings

Snowboard bindings vary according to board size and conditions. As soon as one speaks of the binding hardness, then it is mostly about the stability and with which binding force the bindings were mounted on the snowboards. Due to the different slope conditions and gradient angles, an increased flexibility of the bindings can be required. In other words, the snowboard binding has to give the rider more room for his movements at certain points. As a result, the snowboard bindings have to be adjusted softer. The weight of the rider must also be taken into account. The heavier the rider, the stronger the binding must be able to withstand.

This is because different forces act on the constellation with the movement during the ride. On the one hand, the gravitational force of the earth, which increases due to the slope, and on the other hand, the physical force of the rider during the ride has an effect on the binding and the board. Since the binding transmits this force to the board, it is very important to adjust the strength of the snowboard binding to prevent injury and damage to the board. In addition to the adjustment of the binding, several factors contribute to the hardness of the binding.


Mounting and types of Snowboard Bindings

The following snowboard bindings can be distinguished in detail:

  1. Plate bindings

  2. Belt bindings

  3. Women Bindings

  4. Men Bindings

  5. Children Bindings

These basic forms differ in detail with different additional techniques. The common hole for fixing the bindings to the board is the four-hole hole. Four holes are drilled into the board in a square or trapezoidal shape. In rare cases, especially with Burton bindings, a three-hole hole can be found. Depending on the binding, a plate is attached to it or a shoe holder shape with plastic straps. Then the angles of the snowboard binding and thus the foot position are adjusted.

The Goofy or Regular position is the position in which the standing leg stands in the direction of travel. In the Goofy position it is the right foot and in the Regular position it is the left foot. In the angle setting, the board is divided imaginarily into two equal parts and this dividing axis is used as a straight line axis for the angle setting of the foot bindings. This straightening axis and center of gravity is called the Twin Tip. As soon as the board has a larger bulge in the direction of travel, this straightening axis is called Directional. With both larger bulges on both sides Directional Twin and with board possibility Tapered on both sides. The larger the angle from the heel to the straightening axis, the more acute the angle at the toe of the foot becomes and thus the grip that the rider can apply while riding changes. These two basic positions can then be further broken down into Freestyle and Duckstance, which is suitable for tricks and sports insoles, and Crazyfood, which is suitable for racing and carving.

This also makes it clear that the different boots, namely soft boots or hard boots always have different binding forms. The hard boots do not need any additional stabilisers on the board due to their firm shell, as is the case with soft boots. Softboots almost always have strap bindings with a stable shaft on the lower leg. This shell binding or strap binding, as it is also called, keeps the rider on the board due to the simultaneous straps for the back of the foot. The following technical details are distinguished in the strap bindings: 1. Two straps, 2. One straps and 3. The rear entrance. In the former two straps hold the back of the foot. These consist mostly of hard plastic, like the shaft, which is also called spoiler, also. This shaft additionally stabilizes the soft boots in the shell when driving.

In the latter case, a strap holds the soft boots on the back of the foot and thus exerts greater pressure on the back of the foot and stabilizes the foot better during the ride. In recent times, the first two types of binding have developed into a special and new type of binding: the flow binding. Instead of hard plastic, it is fitted with a semi-solid fabric, which enables better adjustment and more precise fixing of the soft boot. The Flow binding enters through the stern. The spoiler is folded down by pressing a lever. This facilitates and accelerates access.

This technique of accelerated entry can also be found in the Cinch binding, which was specially developed by the company K2 and is equipped with two ratchets. It can adjust the pressure point even more precisely and combines the comfortable entry with good power transmission, as with the Two Straps or the One Straps. The spoiler can also be folded down here, making it easier to get in.

With the Hardboots a special kind of the binding stands out. It is the Step-In-One binding, which is characterised by the fact that no hand movements are necessary when getting in. A plate, which is mounted on the board, fits exactly to the armatures in the boot and buckles with the entrance on the board. Handles and the use of hands become superfluous. The binding is usually hooked to the shoe with a forward movement while pressing down on the board at the same time. By hearing the snap into the snowboard binding the entrance is completed. Nevertheless, it should be checked again whether the snap-in has taken place in order to avoid the risk of injury.

When binding, the different board bows, if any, must also be taken into account. On the Full Rocker no special attention has to be paid to the bows, because it is completely flat and therefore the center of gravity and pivot point on the flat and straight plane have to be calculated. The Camber with Front and Tail Rocker has two equal curves. The bend is created like an even wave. There is also an unevenly curved board: The Camber with Front Rocker. There is also a board with an extraordinary small fulcrum: It is the Reverse Camber. Depending on the pivot point and the weight of the boarder, the bore of the holes for the binding has to be calculated.

The maintenance and repair of the Snowboard Bindings

The bindings of the snowboard are fixed and therefore have the biggest damage problem. Due to the hard plastic straps the danger of getting caught or injuring the hands is greatest. For this reason it would be best to use a snowboard bag as it protects both the board and the binding. A bag can also be used to transport the board better and thus prevent damage to the entire sports equipment. The bag is usually made of synthetic fabric, which is water-repellent and tear-resistant.

In addition, a small repair set should always be carried along for screw loss on the slope, which can be transported like a small bicycle set in a small bag. The repair set includes nuts, washers and screws. It should be able to help with a few hand movements and repair the first damages. Larger repairs, however, should always be done in the nearest specialist workshop.

At the same time you have to take care that the wax care of the underside of the board does not dirty the fittings and the binding of the snowboard. In the worst case, the gluing and lubrication could cause the screws to loosen and the entire binding to come loose. In any case, it must be avoided that the waxing of the underside of the board also comes into contact with the upper side. If it does happen, clean the top with a cloth and an easily soluble detergent and water. Afterwards it should be well dried or at least wiped with a dry cloth.

When maintaining the binding, the screws in the board should be checked regularly for strength and also that they are not misjudged in the holes. In addition, the hard plastic should be checked regularly for signs of use and cracks in shell bindings. In the case of frequent use, a possible replacement of the binding should not be ruled out. In the case of the semi-solid material, due to its sensitivity, it should also be checked carefully whether there are any cracks or whether the padding of the material has worn off. The same applies to the belt latching. Here the springs should always be checked for tension.

In the case of children's shoes and their snowboarder beginnings, care should be taken to ensure that the boots are always comfortable and that the binding is adjusted accordingly. Since children also develop their feet during their growth phase, it is important to make sure that the snowboard binding is adjusted correctly in terms of hardness. Also the change of the weight is decisive. The change in weight not only changes the riding behaviour of the board, but also the snowboard binding has to cope with much greater pressure forces and these have to be included in the assembly of the binding. The same also applies to persons who have been or are exposed to other physical changes in weight and other physical changes. It is important to always take this into account when mounting the snowboard binding.
